Digital Editions

Your book as an EPUB and a PDF, or a PDF alone for a writing-pages journal — what the files are, what they cost, where they are sold, how to download the ebook, how long we host it, and how to restore an expired download.

Digital Editions

A Digital Edition is the book you approved, as downloadable files: an EPUB and a PDF, or the PDF alone for a Journal Edition made only of writing pages. Nothing is printed and nothing is shipped.

The Digital Edition offer in the cart: a checkbox with its price, a line saying it is down from the standalone price because a printed copy is in the same order, and a description of the EPUB and PDF you receive. The My Downloads page: a yellow notice asking the reader to save their own copy, then one edition listed with its cover, an EPUB line, a PDF line, the date it is available here until, and EPUB and PDF download buttons on the right.

What You Get

  • An EPUB with a working table of contents, which reflows to the screen you read it on.
  • A PDF of the interior, rendered without the printer’s bleed margins.

Both are built from the same chapters the printed book is made from, and both open on your book’s cover. There is no DRM: nothing locks the files to an app or a device. The only line on the EPUB’s copyright page that is personal to you is “Prepared for” and your name, alongside the copyright and license notice every copy carries.

A Journal Edition made only of writing pages (lined, dot-grid or blank) comes as a PDF only — an e-reader EPUB of it would have nothing on its pages. Its pages are for writing on: the lines are drawn onto a fixed page rather than written as text, so there is nothing for an e-reader to reflow. The PDF keeps those pages exactly as they print. A Journal Edition that includes a word style has words on its pages and comes as both files. The offer on your book and the cart both name the files that particular book comes as, before you pay.

What It Costs

$14.99 on its own, or $9.99 when you buy a printed copy of that book — now or any time before. Put the printed copy in the same cart and the Digital Edition on that line drops to $9.99 right away. Once you have bought that book in print the lower price is yours for good, so it still applies if you come back months later.

It does not work in the other direction. Buying the Digital Edition does not change what a printed copy costs. Your first printed copy of that book is still charged at its normal first-copy price.

Credits cannot buy a Digital Edition. Credits pay for making and changing books; this is a purchase at checkout, like printing. See Understanding Credits.

Where It Is Sold

Anywhere, once your book is made; new books can be started from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Outside the United States, digital editions are sold by our international reseller, which may charge in your currency and adds your local tax. Beside a printed copy in the same checkout it is offered only when you are ordering from the United States for delivery there; otherwise you buy it on its own after your printed order, at the same add-on price.

When You Can Buy It

After you approve your book, and not before — approval is what fixes the content, and it is the gate for a printed copy and a Digital Edition alike. Once a book is approved you can add the Digital Edition to a cart line that already has a printed copy on it, or buy it on its own from the Digital Edition button on the book’s card on your My Books page.

How the Files Arrive

We start preparing them as soon as you order, and we email you when they are ready — usually within a few minutes. They then wait on your Downloads page, which is in your sidebar.

How Long We Host Them

Download them as often as you like for 12 months, counted from the day the edition is ready rather than from the day you bought it. Each edition shows its own date on the Downloads page, and we email you 30 days before that date arrives.

Please save your own copy somewhere safe. The file on your own device is the product and it is yours permanently. The copy we host is a convenience, not a backup or archival service, and it also ends if you delete your account — see Deleting Your Account.

If a window does close, nothing is lost and nothing has gone wrong — you still own the book. The Downloads page shows a Restore for 2 credits button on that edition, and using it hosts the files again and starts a fresh 12-month window. See Understanding Credits for how credits work.

If a File Is Wrong

Digital editions are non-refundable from the moment of purchase. If a file is corrupt, incomplete, or does not match the book you approved, we repair or re-deliver it at no charge. That repair is your remedy in place of a refund, and it is the term you accept at checkout.

Repair is something we do for you, not something you trigger yourself — there is no rebuild button, and restoring an expired edition is a different thing that will not fix a broken file. When a download is not usable, the Downloads page marks it Needs attention and offers a Get this fixed button. That button takes you to the Support page; it does not raise a ticket by itself, so once you are there choose New Ticket and tell us which file is wrong. If you spot a problem the page has not noticed, open a ticket the same way.

The Audiobook Is a Separate Product

An Audiobook is not a format of the Digital Edition. It is bought separately, hosted for a different length of time, and owning the EPUB does not make the audiobook cheaper. See Audiobooks.

It Also Unlocks Your Book

Buying the Digital Edition unlocks your book: the artwork on your own pages loses its preview watermark. It also counts as a purchase, exactly as buying a printed copy or an Audiobook does, which is what unlocks your next free generation once nothing else is waiting to be bought. See Understanding Credits for the whole rule.
