Your Content License

What you can and cannot do with your personalized book.

Your Content License

The printed book we send you is yours. You own that physical copy. What you receive a license to is the content — the story, the artwork, the design. Here is a plain-language summary — for the full legal terms, see Section 7 of our Terms of Service.

What You Can Do

  • Keep and enjoy your printed books — the copy we deliver belongs to you.
  • Give as gifts — Your books make great personalized gifts.
  • Lend it or read it aloud in any personal, non-commercial setting.
  • Order more copies through our platform.
  • Share excerpts on social media or with friends for personal, non-commercial purposes.

What You Cannot Do

  • Sell copies commercially — You cannot sell your book as a business, in bulk, or through a retail or online marketplace or storefront.
  • Publish on other platforms like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or any self-publishing service.
  • Reproduce the book outside of our platform (printing copies yourself or through another printer).
  • Use cover art separately — You cannot extract the cover image for merchandise (t-shirts, mugs, prints, etc.).
  • Create derivative works — No sequels, adaptations, translations, or screenplays based on the content.
  • Use for AI training — The content cannot be used to train or develop AI models.

Copyright Notice

AI-generated content may not be eligible for copyright protection under current U.S. Copyright Office policy, which generally requires human authorship. This means you cannot register a copyright for the AI-generated portions of your book, and third parties may not be legally prevented from using similar AI-generated content.

Ready-Made Stories

If you chose a ready-made story, the interior is a manuscript we wrote in advance and license to many customers, with your names substituted in. Other customers receive the same underlying story with their own names in it, and we continue to sell that story to other people. You own the printed copy we deliver; you do not own the manuscript.

A ready-made classic is sold the same way, but we did not write the story: it is a public-domain work, credited in the book to its original author, that we adapted by hand in advance. No AI writes any of its text; only its cover art, and any page art it prints, is AI-generated. We substitute the names you give us and, where the story offers the choice, the pronouns you choose, and other customers receive the same adaptation with their own names in it. The original text, as its author published it, is in the public domain and free for anyone to copy — nothing in our terms restricts it. Our adaptation and the design of our edition are ours, under the same license as any other book.

Your License After Account Deletion

If you delete your account, the printed books you have already received remain yours and your license to use their content remains in effect. You are never asked to return or destroy them. However, you will no longer be able to order additional copies through our platform.

The same applies to the files you download: the files of a Digital Edition, and the MP3 of an Audiobook, all stay yours to keep and use once they are on your own device. Deleting your account ends your ability to re-download them — the copies you have saved are the product, and re-download is a convenience while you have an account. Please save your own copy somewhere safe before you delete your account.

For what those two products actually are — the files, what they cost, where they are sold, and how long we host them — see Digital Editions and Audiobooks.
