Two-Factor Authentication
Why every sign-in asks for an email code, how to use an authenticator app instead, and what your recovery codes are for.
Two-Factor Authentication
Every sign-in takes a second step as well as your password. By default we email you a one-time code. You can add an authenticator app instead if you prefer one. Two-factor sign-in cannot be switched off — the choice is which second step you use, not whether you have one.
The Email Code Everyone Gets
After you enter your email address and password, we send a six-digit code to your email address and show you a screen headed Check your email. Type the code there to finish signing in.
This is switched on for every account from the moment you register, and there is no setting anywhere that turns it off.
If the code does not arrive, click Send a new code on that screen, and check your spam folder. Sign-in codes are essential account email, so we send them even if you have turned off every other kind of email from us.
Using an Authenticator App Instead
- Go to Settings and open the Two-Factor Auth tab.
- Click Add authenticator app.
- Scan the QR code with your authenticator app — Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password and similar all work.
- Enter the six-digit code the app shows you, to confirm it is set up.
From then on, sign-in asks for the app’s code instead of emailing you one. The Two-Factor Auth tab shows Authenticator app — In use and Email code — Backup.
Going Back to Email Codes
On the Two-Factor Auth tab, click Remove authenticator app. We go back to emailing you a code at every sign-in. This does not turn two-factor sign-in off — nothing does.
Recovery Codes
Recovery codes are your way back in if you cannot reach your email or your authenticator app. We show them to you once, right after your first successful sign-in with an emailed code. While an authenticator app is set up, you can see them again under 2FA Recovery Codes on the Two-Factor Auth tab, using View Recovery Codes.
Save them somewhere safe, and not only on the phone that holds your authenticator app. Each code works only once.
To use one at sign-in, choose Can’t get the code? Use a recovery code on the email-code screen, or login using a recovery code on the authenticator screen.
